Shipibo Background | The Mission
Shipibo Background
project: Shipibo is relatively new, only having begun within this pass year. But our adventure
continues on to the Jungles of the upper Amazon where we find ourselves working with the native Shipibo tribe
of Peru.
This pre-Columbian culture still retains the knowledge of thousands of medicinal plants whose
healing properties are invaluable to modern society. Ironically, it is the inevitable encroachment
of modern society, with its western values, that is confronting the traditional lifestyle of the
Shipibo.
The Mission
It is in the small village of Betania, on the Ucayali River, where IAPIC is working with Pedro
Tangoa, president of an association of over 200 indigenous villages, on a pilot project to bring clean energy such
as solar paneling, and install a water purification system.
Although the arrival of modern civilization has contributed much to the deterioration of the local habitat, it has also developed
technology that can be utilized to help restore the natural balance that it has disturbed.
IAPIC is using the proceeds from the marketing of traditional Shipibo crafts to sponsor a sustainable
development project that will contribute clean energy technologies to catalyze the emergence of this symbiotic relationship.
In addition, we run a series of events, usually parties, to spark the interest of our generation,
getting them involved and aware of, the condition of our planet.
